The Bibles View on Sex Before Marriage

Known and commonly referred to as fornication in the New Testament and among Christians of today, sex before marriage is an act of sin that greatly irritates God. Scripturally speaking, one of the ways to avoid this act is a suggestion made by Paul the apostle that instead of engaging in this act and grieving God, it is better you do whatever needs done and get married. But I speak this by permission, not of commandment. For I would that all men were even as I myself. But every man hath his proper gift of God, one after this manner and another after that. I say therefore to the unmarried and widows, it is good for them if they abide even as I. but if they cannot contain, let them marry: for it is better to marry than to burn. 1 Corinthians 7:6-9.

Here Paul was suggesting that, instead of burning which may eventually lead one to the act of having sex before marriage, why not marry. It is not a sin to get married but a sin to have sexual intercourse outside marriage. But if any man think that he behaveth himself uncomely towards his virgin, if she passes the flower of her age, and need so require, let him do what he will, he sinneth not: let them marry.

One may wonder why the Apostle Paul repeatedly emphasizes on this issue of getting married rather than indulging in sex outside marriage. The bible makes us to understand that the honour of marriage is getting into it with your bed undefiled. Once your bed is defiled you have practically laid a wrong foundation for your marriage which may come with a lot of consequences. Hebrews 13:4. God himself will be the one to church anyone who breaks this divine rule.

Paul the Apostle setting clarity to this makes us understand that every other sin that man commits is outside the body, but a sin against the body is a sin against God as his Holy Spirit resides in us.Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that commiteth fornication sinneth against his own body. What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s. 1Corinthians 6:18-20.

God demands total honor and obedience from man, and if his Holy presence must abide with us, we must endeavor to flee every form of contamination against his temple. Man was designed to glorify God with his entire being, so indulging in sex before marriage is considered a deliberate measure to set God at naught against us.

God ordained sex to be a holy and enjoyed only by the married. It is considered a reward for marriage, outside which engaging in it is considered is considered sinful. Therefore, shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall become one flesh. Genesis 2:24. I believe God was talking about sex when he said they shall both “cleave”. So you see that God instituted not only marriage but sex inclusive. And as much as God did ordain it must be done only by God set standards.
